ABSTRACTThis study principally identified environmental factors influencing students’ sociability in some selected schools in the Sunyani Municipality. Using a descriptive research design with a stratified and simple random sampling techniques to select four hundred (400) respondents, the following research objectives were examined: a) to establish the various environmental factors of the students’ in Senior High Schools; b) to determine students’ level of sociability in the Senior High Schools; c) to determine the academic performance of students’ in the Senior High Schools; d) to establish the correlation between sociability and school, home and community factors; e) to establish the correlation between students’ academic performance and sociability. The subsequent were the major findings of the study. Firstly, the study identified that all three factors examined (school factors, home factors and community factors) to have influence on the sociability of students’ indeed possessed substantial influence on the sociability of students. Additionally, it was ascertained that students possess high levels of sociability. A closer look at the two years academic performance of students also indicated that students were doing better in the recent year as compared to the past year. This resulted in the confident investigation of the relationship between academic performance and students’ sociability levels. A correlational test between students’ academic performance and their sociability indicated a strong positive relationship between the two. This has declared the results of the study findings fruitful. The study therefore concluded that the performance of students is not based only on the efforts of teachers and the students themselves. However, surrounding factors from the home, school and community can influence their performance and concurrently affect their sociability. The study therefore recommends that, the school counselling unit must also pay much attention to students who have low sociability skills and develop adequate intervention plan that can enhance their adaptability skills.
