ABSTRACTThis study aimed to access the tax management systems of small and medium-scale businesses, using the Berekum Municipality as a case study. The study specifically sought to determine the attitudes and knowledge of Small and medium Businesses towards tax management, determine the level of compliance and identify the challenges of complying with tax regulations Berekum municipality. The study employed a qualitative research design because of its appropriateness in understanding and explaining attitudes of people. This study aimed at filling the gap by gathering relevant data on the role to the economy and records of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Primary data were obtained through the administering of questionnaires to respondents operating within the SMEs. Data collected were coded and analyzed in tables. The findings of the study showed that SMEs contribute immensely to job creation, especially to people with less formal education in the rural areas of the country. With regards to income generation, the study showed that SMEs served as an important catalyst in the generation and distribution of income of the people. The study also revealed among others, the; low awareness of tax laws among the SMEs operators, unfair return for taxes paid, corrupt nature of the tax officials.
