ABSTRACTThis study sought to assess the role of good and effective accounting practices in the operations of SMEs in the Bono East Region using some selected SMEs in the Atebubu-Amanten Municipality. A sample size of three hundred and two (302) was drawn from 1486 SMEs. For the purpose of this study, the non-probability: convenience sampling technique was used as it was easy, fast and usually the least expensive and troublesome. The main data collection instrument used was a questionnaire which contained typically structured questions, relating to each of the variables in the research questions. The completed questionnaires were coded and entered into Microsoft Excel for processing. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages and was interpreted and presented with tables, charts and graphs. It has been ascertained that 89% of respondents could read and write yet only few (i.e. 32%) of them were keeping records on their proceeds. Among the challenges confronted SMEs in records keeping were lack of personal knowledge in bookkeeping, time consuming, difficult to balance accounts, seen to be the work of professionals among others. NBSSI and its Business Advisory Centres were recommended to offer SMEs effective Training Programmes like seminars, workshops, symposia, etc. in order to equip owners-managers of SMEs with the requisite skills on general business management.
