This study aimed at evaluating the performance of the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information Systems (GIFMIS) as an instrument for controlling expenditures in the public sector of Ghana, with a particular concentration on selected public sector institutions in the Bono Region. Specifically, the study aimed at ascertaining the extent and areas in which GIFMIS was used for expenditure control, the level of compliance with GIFMIS usage, the efficacy of its usage in expenditure control practices, and the obstacles to its implementation. Using a descriptive research design, the study surveyed key management personnel from public sector institutions in the Bono Region. The study comprised a total of 65 participants involved in internal control activities at the selected institutions. Using SPSS as the analytical instrument, questionnaires were use of descriptive and inferential statistics to analyze the collected data. The results indicated that GIFMIS was utilized in various areas of expenditure control, such as generating cash pooling reports to determine available funds and cash requirement reports to identify pending payments. The study also noted a high level of compliance with GIFMIS utilization across all aspects of expenditure control. Additionally, the utilization of GIFMIS was found to be effective in promoting accountability, payment, and commitment controls, as well as efficiency and reliability. However, common problems associated with the use of GIFMIS for expenditure control included its lack of user friendliness and challenges related to corruption. The study recommends that the administration of institutions in the government sector provide training to update core staff on current financial management practices, including the utilization of GIFMIS.
