ABSTRACTBackground: Globally, there is low usage of contraceptives. In Ghana, contraceptive use among reproductive aged women follows similar trend, leading to a rise in unplanned and unwanted pregnancies with increased maternal and neonatal mortalities. The study area, Tarkwa, has seen a decline in contraceptive usage between 2018 and 2019, leading to the need to identify the factors that affect modern contraceptive use. Objective: This study looked at the factors affecting modern contraceptive use among reproductive aged women in TarkwaMethods: The study was cross-sectional involving 380 women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in Tarkwa, Ghana. The sample was selected using systematic random sampling technique. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data which was entered unto SPSS version 21.0 for analysis. The association between contraceptive use and the independent categorical variables was determined using chi-square and logistic regression modelResults: A total of 380 women responded to the survey. Awareness of contraceptives method was almost universal (97.63 %). A little over half (55.26%) had moderate to good knowledge towards contraceptive use. Overall, less than a quarter (24.21 %) reported current contraceptive use, with the most preferred method being the pill (42.39%). Plan to use contraceptives in the future was low (45.53%). Factors strongly associated with contraceptive use were age (p=0.041), ever given birth (p=0.023), religion (p=0.021) and plan to use contraceptive in the future (pConclusion: Awareness of contraceptive methods was nearly universal, but knowledge towards contraceptive use was poor and current contraceptive use was low. The study highlights the need to educate and motivate the women for effective and appropriate use of contraceptives in order to avoid unplanned and unwanted pregnancy.TABLE OF CONTENT DECLARATIONACKNOWLEDGEMENTDEDICATIONTABLE OF CONTENTABSTRACTCHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION1.1 Background to the Study1.2 Problem Statement1.3 Justification1.4 Research Questions1.5 Objectives of the Study1.5.1 General Objectives1.5.2 Specific Objectives1.6 Significance of the StudyCHAPTER TWOLITERATURE REVIEW2.0 Introduction2.1 Knowledge of contraceptives and status of use among reproductive aged women2.2 Status of Modern Contraceptive Use Among Reproductive Aged Women2.3 Types of contraceptives used by reproductive aged women2.4 Side effects associated with the contraceptive method of choice2.5 Sources of contraceptive used by reproductive aged women2.6 Association between socio-demographic characteristics and contraceptive use among reproductive aged women2.7 Summary of Chapter2.8 ConclusionCHAPTER THREEMETHODOLOGY3.0 Introduction3.1 Background of the Study Area3.2 Study type and design3.2.1 Study Type3.2.2 Study Design3.3 Study Population3.3.1 Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria3.4.
