Introduction: Hypertension (HPT), which is the number one risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a global public health problem. It contributes significantly to premature deaths due to CVDs. A deeper understanding of the lived experiences and beliefs of people with hypertension has the potential of identifying sustainable interventions to control hypertension. This research explored the knowledge and experiences of hypertensive patients (middle-age men and women) in Kassena-Nankana Municipality and Kassena-Nankana West District in Northern Ghana. Methods: A cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted using 40 middle-aged men and women (48-68 years). Four focus group discussions in groups of 10 were conducted across 4 geographic zones across the Navrongo Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (HDSS). Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. QSR NVivo 10 software was used to organise the data and for subsequent thematic analyses. Results: Most of the study participants (n = 24; 65%) were women. Knowledge of HPT and its symptoms before being diagnosed was low. Also, forgetfulness, unavailability of medicines at health centers and high-cost of drugs were some of the experiences shared by the participants whilst living with HPT. In terms of the treatment strategies, more than half of the study participants (n = 27; 67.5%) resorted to guidance on dietary choices and alcohol consumption, use of traditional medicines and general life style modifications. Also, most patients (about 70%) considered hypertension an important disease, albeit reporting taking medication only when symptomatic. Conclusion: The study showed a general low level of knowledge and treatment strategies of hypertension status. A comprehensive health education program aimed at knowledge and treatment strategies about hypertension will benefit the study area.
