ABSTRACTThe main objective of this study was to examine the effect of stress on the performance of bank employees in Sunyani. The specific objectives were to identify the causes of stress among bank employees in the selected banks in the Sunyani municipality, determine the relationship between stress and the performance of banks employees in Sunyani, examine the stress management intervention techniques among bank employees in Sunyani and ascertain the challenges in managing stress in the selected banks in the Sunyani municipality. A descriptive research design was employed and data collected from employees from banks in Sunyani township using questionnaire. After the data collection, the questionnaires were coded and analysed using SPSS version 22.0 and the results presented using tables. The study finds that the causes of stress include the nature of work, lack of career prospects, demands of the job, workplace politics, no work-life balance, inadequate resources, lack of control on work, deadline to complete the targets, insufficient information and lack of career development. As regards the stress coping strategies the study finds that they include counselling services, flexitime programmes, meditation techniques relaxation techniques, making fun of the situation, giving up the attempt to do anything related to the condition, friends and family giving advice/emotional support, learning from experience by seeing something good in the current situation, accepting to live with the condition come what may, and instrumental support. Finally the regression analysis shows that stress has a negative and significant effect on the performance of banks. It is recommended that banks invest in these programmes to enable employees participate in them to cope with stress. This would go a long way to boost the performance of these banks.
