ABSTRACTThe study sought to explore the roles of Headteachers in improving students’ academic performance in Sunyani West Municipality. The target population for the study was the headteachers and teachers in all public basic schools in the Municipality. The total number of headteachers and classroom teachers in the municipality was one thousand, four hundred and twenty five (1,425) out of which ten percent (10%) were sampled. The study employed the quantitative method. The quota sampling technique was used to determine the twenty (20) teachers and headteachers each across the seven (7) circuits in the directorate in equal proportion i.e. Odomase A, Odomase B, Nsoatre A, Nsoatre B, Chiraa A, Chiraa B and Fiapre. Using the probability sampling technique; a total of 140 participants responded to the questionnaires which was the only research instrument used. The data was analysed using both descriptive and inferential analysis; presented in tables and figures. The main findings were that: headteachers encourage continual improvement in teachers' performance through motivation; it was evident that headteachers help overcome problems that are hinderance to the performance of teachers in the Municipality. Among the problems uncovered was that the resources provided for headteachers were inadequate, resulting in poor academic performance. An equal percentage (88%) of teachers agreed that most students do not do assignments and end up performing poorly in exams. The overall results suggest that, headteachers in the Sunyani Municipality performed their roles as expected of them; thereby improving upon teaching quality and the overall performance of students in the school. The researcher recommends that adequate resources be provided for headteachers to enable them improve students’ academic performance in Sunyani West Municipality.TABLE OF CONTENTS DECLARATIONACKNOWLEDGEMENTSDEDICATIONABBREVIATIONSCHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION1.1 Background to the Study1.2 Problem Statement1.3 Objectives of the Study1.4 Research Questions1.5 Significance of the Study1.6 Delimitation1.7 Limitation1.8 Operational Definition of Terms1.9 Organization of the StudyCHAPTER TWOLITERATURE REVIEW2.1 Introduction2.2 Theoretical Framework2.2.1 Role Theory of Headteacher2.2.2 Human Relation Theory2.2.3 Needs Theory2.3 Conceptual Framework2.3.1 The Concept of Headteacher2.3.2 Headteacher as a Leader2.3.3 Roles of Headteachers and School Performance2.3.4 Challenges Headteachers Encountered2.3.5 Basic Education in Ghana2.3.6 The Role of Headteachers in Basic School2.3.7 Planning2.3.8 Effective School-community Relationship2.3.9 Staff Personnel Services2.3.10 Pupil Personnel Services2.3.11 Curriculum and Instructional Development, Improvement and Appraisal2.3.12 Financial and Business Administration/Management2.3.13 Physical Facilities (School Plant) and Educational Materials2.3.14 Record Keeping and Management2.3.15 Learning Resources2.3.16 General Tasks2.4 Parental Involvement in Children Education2.4.1 Challenges facing Community Involvement in Schools2.5 Conceptual Framework2.6 Empirical Review2.7 Chapter SummaryCHAPTER THREEMETHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY3.1 Introduction3.2 Study Area3.3 Research and Design3.4 Population3.5 Sample and Sampling Technique3.6 Research Instrument3.7 Validity and Reliability3.8 Data Collection Process3.9 Data Analysis Procedure3.10 Ethical ConsiderationCHAPTER FOURRESULTS AND DISCUSSING4.1 Introduction4.2 Gender of the Respondents4.3 Age of Respondents4.4 Academic Qualification of the Respondents4.5 Roles of Headteachers in Basic Schools4.6 Impact of HeadTeachers role on the Pupils Academic Performance4.7 Pearson's Correlation between Provision of Teaching/Learning and Pupils’ Academic Achievement4.8 Analysis of the ways to improve roles of headteachers towards an improved students’ academic performance.4.9 Challenges Headteachers Faced in Discharging their RolesCHAPTER FIVESUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS5.1 Summary of Findings5.2 Conclusions5.3 Recommendations5.4 Suggestions for Further ResearchAPENDIX
