ABSTRACTThe study on assessing assets maintenance optimization for power transmission systems using Bui Power Authority as the case study. The study used purposive sampling techniques to sample 15 respondents. Two focus group discussions were held to collect the data. The study found the following; The general asset management strategies at Bui Power Authority were the use of Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems to keep records of maintenance activities to track and predict spares replacement, conduction of standard test periodically and to inform prompt remedial actions and General Assets Management Strategies (GAMS) adopted by BPA to achieving optimum life cycle are corrective, preventive, risk based and condition-based strategies. On the challenges on challenges that account for the shortfalls in the time-based maintenance approach, the study found statements such as power shortage cutting off optimum maintenance activities, lack of Original Equipment, Manufacturer (OEM) support, interference from the network operators, delay in procurement of spare parts and materials, failures are often not analyzed to the extent that similar future failures can be prevented, effective maintenance actions are made but without structure and clear relevance to organization objectives, maintenance induced failures, accepting manufacturer’s recommendations without consideration of specific circumstances of the usage, unavailability of spares, staff technical competence, ageing equipment, poor leadership commitment, poor staff welfare. On the impact of optimized maintenance management on Bui Power Authority’s operations, the study revealed that BPA have optimized the reliability of equipment and infrastructure, BPA have ensured that through maintenance culture, equipment are always in good condition, optimized maintenance has improved BPAs operational safety, prompt emergency repairs of equipment to secure the best possible availability for production of power or electricity, BPA ensures that the unit is always ready for generating of power, maximising production or increasing facilities availability at the lowest cost and at the highest quality and safety standards, to optimise maintenance resource cost within the constraints of safety and plant condition standards, improving spares stock control, product unit cost reduction and profit maximization, providing reliable cost and budgetary control and identifying and implementing cost reductions. It therefore recommended that maintenance costs should be categorized and presented in the best way to help the management’s decision-making process.
