ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was examine how human resource management practices is impacting on the performance of the poultry industry in the Dormaa Municipality. Specifically, the study south to examine the current state of human resource management practices, assess the challenges confronting farmers as they manage human resource in the poultry industry and determine the effect of human resource management practices on the performance of the poultry industry in the Dormaa municipality. The study employed a descriptive survey design based on the quantitative approach. All the poultry farmers in the Dormaa municipality who are over 400 formed the population of the study. Simple random technique was used to sample 164 farmers from the poultry industry. Questionnaire was the instrument used for the data collection. The questionnaire was self-administered and data collected was analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistical tool. The study found that the poultry farmers at Dormaa municipality have human resource policy that guides them in their operations. It was also established that the respondents use human resource management functions to attract, maintain and retain human resource in the poultry industry. On the challenges facing the farmers as they manage human resource, it was identified the farmers do not get competent and skillful workers with right attitude who committed and loyal to the goals of the poultry industry to employ. The study further identified that there is high employee turnover in the poultry industry in the municipality. With respect to the effect of human resource management practices on the performance of the poultry industry, the results showed that there significant positive relationship between human resource management practices and the performance of the poultry industry in the Dormaa municipality. Based on findings the study concluded that poultry farmers in the municipality are using human resource management best practices to attract, maintain and retain workers in the poultry industry. The study also concluded that farmers do not get right calibre of human resource to employ which may affect the performance of the industry. On the relationship between the human resource management and the performance of the industry, implies that for improved performance in the industry requires effective human resource management. The study recommends that poultry farmers association in the municipality, policy makers and the farmers should all help to improve human resource management practices in order to turn the fortune of the poultry industry. Lastly, the study recommends that future studies should extend the study area to cover other districts and municipality in region and country as a whole where poultry farming is practised.
