ABSTRACTThis research scrutinized the reward management practices and employees’ behaviour at the Municipal Ghana National Fire Service (MGNFS) within the Sunyani Municipality of Ghana. The research adopted a descriptive survey design by using quantitative research approach. The researcher used a population of 55 in conducting the study. Again, the researcher used purposive and convenience sampling to select fifty-five (55) employees which represent hundred percent (100%) of the population for the study. The researcher used questionnaire as his main data collection instrument and a structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the employees. The data gathered from the questionnaire were analyzed by using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics method (mean, standard deviation), as well as correlation and regression analysis, was used for analyzing data obtained from the questionnaires. The result of the analysis was however presented using pie chat and tables. In general, the finding of the study revealed that the Municipal Ghana National Fire Service in the Sunyani Municipality adopts reward management practices and these include: recognition programs, grade and pay structure, promotion, appreciation and award, training and development and performance evaluation leading to reward. Also, the research result revealed that the Municipal Ghana National Fire Service employees had positive perceptions of reward management practices. These are reward increases employees’ motivation and performance, reward is important for retaining high performers and creates opportunities for employees’ promotion, financial reward motivates more than non-financial reward, and that financial rewards are more effective than the non-financial rewards. Again, the study also discovered that the Municipal Ghana National Fire Service used reward management practices to improve the performance of the organization through the positive effect on the employees’ behaviour. The study concluded that the Municipal Ghana National Fire Service faced some challenges that hinder the effective implementation of the current reward management practices. Notable among them are poor commitment and competencies of management, management lack of knowledge and skills to evaluate performance reward, reward not aligned to labour market, insufficient resources for performance rewards, and reward not connected to employees’ specific needs. Finally, the study recommended that the Municipal Ghana National Fire Service within Sunyani Municipality should allocate sufficient resources for employee performance leading to reward, the management should be well equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills in order to be competent and committed to evaluate the performance of the employees and the employees’ reward should be aligned to the labour market as well as be connected to their specific needs.
