ABSTRACTThis current research delved into the psychosocial challenges of parents with children with disabilities in the Sunyani municipality. With the phenomenological design, the study employed a qualitative research approach to address specific research questions. The study was limited to parents with children with disabilities. Using a semi-structured interview guide, data was collected from eight parents who were selected through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. The study revealed that society believes that parents who have children with disabilities are because of their evil deeds in their past life. Also, the study showed that parents who give birth to children with disabilities feel degraded, disengaged, stigmatized, isolated and financially stressed. To overcome these psychosocial challenges, parents adopted prayers, acceptance, self-encouragement and support from family and society. To resolve the issues of stigmatization, anger, depression and worry as well as isolation and loneliness, the study proposed that counselling services must be available for such parents at the health centres and within the communities. It was also indicated by most parents that finances assumed a significant part in the development of the child. These expenses range from medical to spiritual consultation as well as transportation of the child. Children with disabilities require extra attention, care, and support, which has a direct impact on their parents, particularly mothers, so the process of treating the child should be made easier and explained to parents to ease their stress. The researcher recommends that group counselling should be organised for parents to have the opportunity to interact by sharing their stories and the experiences they commonly encounter and how they solve the challenges they encounter.
